Mongu, Western Province, Zambia.
The people of Lukulu and Mitete districts in Western Province are poised to benefit from a transformative infrastructure drive, following Zambia’s strategic agreements with Egypt. The collaboration, which includes the construction of the Lukulu Bridge over the Zambezi River and the Tapo-Sikongo Road linking Zambia to Angola, is set to enhance regional connectivity, stimulate trade, and create employment opportunities.
Western Province Permanent Secretary, Simomo Akapelwa, highlighted the profound impact of these projects, emphasizing their role in job creation, particularly for youths and women, while also strengthening Zambia’s trade links with neighboring Angola.
“The construction phase alone will generate numerous jobs, and in the long run, the improved road network will unlock economic opportunities by facilitating seamless trade,” he stated.
The Zambia-Egypt partnership, formalized through eight Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs), spans key sectors including agriculture, health, energy, and infrastructure. A significant focus is placed on the Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing, and Urban Development, which is spearheading transportation improvements in Western Province.
These developments align with President Hakainde Hichilema’s broader vision of economic transformation through infrastructure investment, job creation, and regional trade expansion.
Mwiya Mwiya, Coordinator for Destiny for Zambian Youth in Lukulu and Mitete Districts, commended the initiative, noting that for years, residents have relied on pontoons for transport. “This is the kind of progress we have been waiting for. Improved infrastructure will bring tangible benefits to our communities,” he remarked.
The New Dawn Government’s commitment to infrastructure development, supported by international partnerships, underscores its dedication to fostering long-term economic growth and improving the livelihoods of people in Western Province.
