In a significant step towards enhancing regional trade and connectivity, Hon. Eng. Charles L. Milupi, MP, Zambia’s Minister of Infrastructure, Housing, and Urban Development, met with Dr. Abdallah Ulega, Minister of Works for the Republic of Tanzania, on the sidelines of the Transforming Transport Conference in Washington, D.C.
The high-level meeting centered on accelerating the development of key border infrastructure projects, particularly the Nakonde-Tunduma One-Stop Border Post upgrade and the Zombe-Kaseshya Border Post development. These projects are critical to improving trade facilitation, reducing transit times, and fostering economic integration between the two nations.
To ensure swift progress, the Ministers issued directives to their respective technical teams, emphasizing:
- Strict adherence to infrastructure standards and timely completion of all construction works.
- Expedited administrative and legal processes for the operationalization of the Nakonde-Tunduma One-Stop Border Post upon completion.
Recognizing the strategic importance of these border posts, the two Ministers agreed to undertake a joint inspection visit in April 2025. The tour will assess ongoing construction at the Nakonde-Tunduma Border Post and address infrastructure and operational challenges at the Zombe-Kaseshya Border Post in Mbala, reinforcing the commitment of both governments to modernizing their border facilities.
The World Bank, a key partner in the implementation of these projects, participated in the discussions and reaffirmed its commitment to supporting both Zambia and Tanzania in achieving seamless cross-border trade through improved infrastructure.
The joint efforts by Zambia and Tanzania reflect a shared vision to enhance trade efficiency, economic growth, and the free movement of goods and people through world-class border infrastructure. These initiatives align with broader regional integration goals, positioning both countries as pivotal trade corridors in the region.
The New Dawn Government through the Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing, and Urban Development remains committed to working closely with the Tanzanian Government and development partners to ensure the successful and timely completion of these transformative projects.
