Lusaka, Zambia.
The Zambia Police Service has arrested a 27 year old man in connection with the defacing and damaging of the recently introduced K5 coin, in an incident that raises concerns over public confidence in the national currency.
The suspect, identified as Michael Tembo of House Number 7770, Chimwemwe Township in Kitwe and originally from Zumali Village, Chief Mwanjabantu, Petauke District, is alleged to have willfully damaged the coin by separating its two layers.
He reportedly recorded the act on video while making disparaging comments suggesting the coins were counterfeit, referring to them as “gongas”. The video was later circulated via his Facebook page under the name “Michael Zee11”.
Tembo has since been formally warned and cautioned for the offense of “Willful Defacing, Soiling or Damaging of a Coin of the Bank”, contrary to Section 67(1)(f) and (3)(b) of the Bank of Zambia Act No. 5 of 2022.
Authorities indicate that the incident, which occurred between 13th and 14th April 2025 in Kitwe District, not only constitutes a violation of the law but also has broader implications for public trust in Zambia’s currency and overall financial system.
The suspect is currently in custody at Kitwe Central Police Station as investigations continue to identify possible accomplices involved in the act.
The Zambia Police Service has issued a strong reminder to the public that any acts of defacing, damaging, or otherwise mishandling legal tender are serious offenses punishable by law. The Service further urged citizens to treat national currency with respect and avoid any conduct that could compromise the integrity and stability of the country’s financial system.
