Zambia has sent a clear message to the global mining industry: environmental responsibility will not be sacrificed in the country’s quest to become one of the world’s top copper producers.

Speaking at the official opening of the 2025 Zambia International Mining and Energy Conference (ZIMEC) in Kitwe, Minister of Mines and Minerals Development, Hon. Paul Kabuswe, underscored the New Dawn Government’s unwavering stance on sustainable mining practices. He reaffirmed that while Zambia aims to achieve an ambitious annual copper production target of three million metric tonnes by 2031, the country’s natural resources — particularly its water bodies — will not be compromised in the process.

“Economic growth must go hand in hand with environmental protection,” Kabuswe said. “Mining companies that disregard environmental regulations will face decisive action. We will not allow water pollution or ecosystem destruction in the name of progress.”

Zambia’s mining sector continues to play a critical role in job creation, export earnings, and national development. However, Kabuswe was clear that the country’s long-term prosperity depends on responsible resource management.

The minister highlighted the National Minerals Development Policy of 2022 as the foundation for the government’s approach, with strengthened regulatory frameworks now in place to ensure compliance. Increased monitoring efforts and stricter penalties for environmental breaches are already being implemented.

As Zambia positions itself as a leading copper producer on the world stage, it is equally determined to set an example for sustainable and responsible mining practices.
