ZAMBIA SECURES $20 MILLION INVESTMENT TO BOOST GREEN TRANSPORT AND RENEWABLE ENERGY THROUGH MGEE-EVC (MoU)

‎The Ministry of Green Economy and Environment has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with EVC Investments, paving the way for a $20 million investment aimed at revolutionising Zambia’s transportation sector and accelerating the country’s green economy.

‎Signed on 16th July 2025 during the Invest in Zambia International Conference, which was officially opened by President Hakainde Hichilema, the MoU aligns with the conference theme, “Driving Generational Transformative Investments Through Joint Ventures and Partnerships.” During the opening, several investment agreements spanning mining, renewable energy, finance and cross-border partnerships were signed, showcasing Zambia’s commitment to translating plans into real, job-creating projects.

‎Key components of the agreement include:

‎1. Importation of electric vehicles (EVs) for both personal and commercial use.

‎2. Establishment of solar-powered EV charging stations in major cities.

‎3. A feasibility study for setting up an electric vehicle assembly plant in Zambia.

‎4. Solar power generation to support the charging network and contribute to the national grid.

‎This investment is expected to reduce carbon emissions, create local employment opportunities and support Zambia’s commitment to United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 11 (Sustainable Cities) 12 (Responsible Consumption) and 13 (Climate Action).

‎The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring this partnership aligns with Zambia’s sustainability frameworks, positioning the country as a leader in green transportation and renewable energy in the region.

‎Under President Hichilema’s watch, Zambia is not just participating in Africa’s economic transformation, it is aiming to lead it.
