ZAMBIA SECURES $40 MILLION SOLAR PROJECT UNDER PRESIDENTIAL INITIATIVE TO POWER PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS IN EASTERN PROVINCE

Zambia has taken a major step toward a sustainable energy future with the signing of a landmark $40 million solar investment agreement aimed at powering public institutions in the Eastern Province. The partnership between Zambian owned Accura Logistics and global financier Baker Global Capital Africa marks a new chapter in harnessing renewable energy to stimulate economic development and enhance public service delivery.
The deal, formalised today in Lusaka, will see the installation of 50 megawatts (MW) of solar energy across 209 public facilities, including schools and health centres. This milestone forms part of the ambitious Presidential Solar Initiative, which aims to inject 1,000MW of clean power into the national grid by the end of 2025.
Speaking at the event, Minister of Energy Hon. Makozo Chikote described the agreement as a strong demonstration of how public-private partnerships are catalysing real change under the New Dawn Government. He said the project is not only about energy access but about transforming the lives of citizens through improved education, healthcare and economic opportunity.
“This partnership proves that Zambia is serious about turning policy into impact,” said Mr. Chikote. “We are creating the right environment for investment while empowering local businesses to be part of the national development agenda.”
The collaboration underscores rising investor confidence in Zambia, Strengthened by political stability and sound economic management under President Hakainde Hichilema. Minister Chikote praised the administration’s clear policy direction and institutional reforms, which have made Zambia an attractive destination for responsible and sustainable investment.
Baker Global Capital Africa’s Founder, Mr. Douglas Baker, reaffirmed his company’s commitment to Zambia’s green energy vision. “We are honoured to work alongside Zambian partners to deliver solutions that are sustainable, scalable and impactful,” he said. “This project reflects our belief that access to clean energy is fundamental to inclusive development.”
Echoing the sentiment, Accura Logistics CEO Mr. Chola Katai lauded the Government for championing local entrepreneurship. “We are proud to be at the forefront of this energy transition. With the right support, Zambian companies can lead in driving national progress.”
As Zambia positions itself as a regional leader in renewable energy, the Ministry of Energy reiterates its readiness to fast-track similar investments through streamlined regulatory processes and robust oversight.
With this initiative, Zambia not only powers up institutions it powers up progress.
