Zambia is courting deeper engagement with the Czech Republic as it accelerates reforms in its mining sector and pushes for greater value in addition to its vast mineral wealth.
In a high level meeting held in Lusaka, the Zambian Minister of Mines and Minerals Development, Honourable Paul C. Kabuswe, extended a strategic invitation to Czech companies to participate in the country’s unfolding mining and industrial renaissance.
Speaking during talks with Mr. Marian Jurecka, the Deputy Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, Minister Kabuswe outlined Zambia’s ambitious agenda to transform its mining sector from a resource extractive model into a value driven, technology enabled industry.
“Zambia is charting a new course that requires trusted partners with proven expertise. The Czech Republic, with its rich history of industrial innovation and development cooperation, is uniquely positioned to join us on this transformative journey,” Kabuswe said.
He highlighted Zambia’s sweeping reforms aimed at fostering transparency and investor confidence, including the establishment of a Minerals Regulation Commission, which is expected to create a more predictable and competitive mining landscape. These reforms, the Minister emphasized, are designed to attract not just capital, but also technical know how, innovation and sustainable practices.
A Strategic Invitation for Czech Investors
Minister Kabuswe presented a portfolio of opportunities for Czech investors, ranging from greenfield exploration projects in underexplored territories to partnerships in local mineral processing and technology transfer. He also advocated for joint ventures that would empower local enterprises, support artisanal miners and build a robust supply chain for mining equipment and services.
“We invite Czech industry leaders to not only invest but to collaborate with Zambia in pioneering environmentally responsible mining, skills development and the creation of local value chains that drive inclusive growth,” he said.
Boosting Capacity for Geological Research
Acknowledging the Czech Republic’s donation of advanced equipment to the National Geological Survey Laboratory, Kabuswe noted that this support was pivotal in strengthening Zambia’s geoscientific capabilities. Enhanced geological data, he explained, would play a critical role in de-risking exploration investments and informing evidence based policy development.
The meeting also served as a reaffirmation of the enduring Zambia Czech partnership, rooted in historical solidarity and shared aspirations for sustainable development. Minister Kabuswe thanked the Czech Republic for designating Zambia as a priority country in its development cooperation portfolio, with annual support of €3 million through 2030.
In conclusion, both parties expressed optimism that the dialogue would pave the way for deeper collaboration in mining, industrial technology and education, while fostering private sector led growth.
“We envision a future where Zambian and Czech companies innovate together, invest together and grow together, anchored in mutual respect and shared prosperity,” Kabuswe stated.
