The Government of the Republic of Zambia will be represented at the State Funeral of His Holiness Pope Francis, to be held in Vatican City on Saturday, 26th April 2025. This solemn occasion follows the passing of the Pope on Monday, 21st April 2025, at the age of 88.

President Hakainde Hichilema has appointed a distinguished delegation to represent Zambia and convey the nation’s condolences. The delegation includes Hon. Mulambo Haimbe, S.C., M.P., Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation; Hon. Charles Milupi, M.P., Minister of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development; The Most Reverend Ignatius Chama, Archbishop of Kasama and President of the Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops; and Right Reverend George Cosmas Zumaile Lungu, Bishop of Chipata.

In a message of tribute, President Hichilema expressed Zambia’s deep sorrow at the passing of Pope Francis, describing him as “a shepherd of profound humility, unwavering compassion, and a beacon of moral leadership.” The President fondly recalled his audience with the late Pontiff at the Vatican on 19th February 2022, during which they discussed matters of shared concern, including peace, social justice, and global development.

The delegation is expected to return to Zambia following the funeral rites. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation remains in close coordination with Vatican officials to ensure the Republic of Zambia is duly represented during this historic and deeply reflective event.
