The Zambian government has assured the public that national footballer Kelvin Mubanga Kampamba remains safe in Libya, following disruptions to his travel plans caused by ongoing instability in the North African country.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts, Mr. Kampamba had been scheduled to depart Libya on Friday, 16th May 2025. However, his initial flight booked via Istanbul was cancelled due to the deterioration of security conditions in parts of Libya, which have adversely affected commercial flight operations.
In a swift response, the Zambian Embassy in Egypt has secured an alternative flight for the player, now scheduled to depart from Misrata on Monday, 19th May 2025. The embassy is also actively exploring the possibility of an earlier evacuation should conditions permit.
Minister of Youth, Sport and Arts, Honourable Elvis C. Nkandu, has been in regular contact with the embassy and has received assurances that Mr. Kampamba is currently in a secure location. Authorities remain in close coordination to ensure his safe return home.
The Ministry further confirmed that Mr. Kampamba is the only Zambian national known to be directly affected by the unrest in Libya at this time. The situation is being closely monitored and the government continues to prioritize the safety and well being of its citizens abroad.
