The Zambian Government has pledged continued support for culture and rural tourism as pathways for local development, with President Hakainde Hichilema affirming this commitment through Tourism Minister Rodney Sikumba during the 2025 Ikubi Lya Loongo Traditional Ceremony in Mumbwa.
The colourful event, which celebrates the heritage of the Sala and Ila people, attracted traditional leaders, government officials, Members of Parliament and residents who gathered to mark the harvest season and honour the legacy of the revered Loongo priestess, Inashamwenda.
Speaking on behalf of President Hichilema, Minister Sikumba highlighted the value of traditional ceremonies as vehicles for cultural preservation, community unity and economic empowerment through tourism.
“Ceremonies like Ikubi Lya Loongo are powerful platforms for showcasing our heritage while creating jobs, promoting local businesses, and attracting visitors to our rural communities,” the Minister said.
He noted the Government’s continued investment in agriculture, infrastructure, education and social protection across Mumbwa and Shibuyunji, pointing to the impact of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) irrigation projects, feeder road upgrades and cash assistance programmes in transforming rural communities.
Minister Sikumba also cited progress on the US$560 million Kitumba Copper Mine in Mumbwa, which has created over 2,500 jobs, supporting Zambia’s copper production goals while enhancing local infrastructure and energy access.
President Hichilema commended traditional leaders for preserving cultural values and partnering with Government in fostering peace and unity, urging stakeholders to work together to advance inclusive growth and environmental sustainability.
The Ikubi Lya Loongo ceremony remains a significant event on Zambia’s cultural calendar, celebrating the identity and resilience of the Sala and Ila people while contributing to the country’s drive for economic diversification through tourism.
