The media fraternity in Zambia has been lauded for its instrumental role in advancing national development, preserving cultural heritage, and fostering public awareness on critical issues. Western Province Permanent Secretary, Mr. Simomo Akapelwa, delivered this commendation, acknowledging the media’s dedication to professionalism and impactful storytelling.

Reflecting on recent national events — including the National Youth Day Celebrations, the Kuomboka Ceremony, and the red locust outbreak in parts of Western Province — Mr. Akapelwa emphasized the vital contribution of the media in informing and uniting communities.

“The tireless efforts of our media practitioners have ensured that citizens are kept well-informed with accurate and timely information,” Mr. Akapelwa stated. “Your comprehensive coverage of the red locust infestation has played a crucial role in raising awareness and equipping affected communities with the knowledge needed to respond effectively.”

He further underscored the media’s role in elevating Zambia’s cultural profile through the vibrant portrayal of the Kuomboka Ceremony, a hallmark of the nation’s cultural calendar. “Your reporting has not only celebrated our rich cultural traditions but has also stimulated domestic tourism and strengthened national cohesion,” Mr. Akapelwa added.

The Permanent Secretary extended his gratitude to both public and private media houses for upholding the principles of responsible journalism, applauding their balanced and objective coverage of events that shape the nation’s socio-economic landscape.

As Zambia continues to navigate a dynamic media environment, Mr. Akapelwa’s remarks serve as a reaffirmation of the essential partnership between government and the press in promoting development, safeguarding cultural heritage, and empowering citizens through credible information.
