Zambia’s ongoing progress in the fight against corruption has been reinforced by the latest improvement in the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), reflecting the government’s commitment to transparency, accountability and good governance. The country’s CPI score rose to 39 in 2024, up from 37 in 2023, marking a second consecutive year of improvement under President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration.
This upward trajectory underscores the New Dawn government’s determination to break from past trends and implement lasting reforms.Since taking office in 2021, President Hichilema has spearheaded a robust anti-corruption agenda, ensuring that both past and present offenders face justice.
His administration has strengthened institutional frameworks, reinforced oversight mechanisms and taken decisive legal action against those involved in corrupt activities.Unlike previous administrations, which often pledged but failed to deliver on anti-corruption commitments, the UPND government has matched its words with concrete actions.
A critical element of this reform strategy has been the establishment of the Economic and Financial Crimes Court (EFCC), which has accelerated the prosecution of corruption-related cases. This specialized court has played a vital role in enhancing judicial efficiency, ensuring that cases are handled swiftly and fairly and restoring public trust in the legal system.
Beyond strengthening governance, these anti-corruption efforts are positioning Zambia as a more attractive destination for foreign investment.Investors seek environments with strong legal protections and transparent governance, and Zambia’s improved CPI score signals a shift towards a more predictable and secure business climate.
This, in turn, is expected to spur economic growth, create jobs and drive long-term development.By taking decisive action against corruption, the New Dawn government is reshaping Zambia’s governance landscape and demonstrating that accountability is not just a promise but a principle.
As the nation continues on this transformative path, Zambians can anticipate a future characterized by integrity, economic progress and strengthened democratic institutions.
