The Ministry of Energy has hailed the growing wave of investor interest in Zambia’s renewable energy sector, as the country positions itself as a regional leader in solar power development.

According to Mr. Arnold Simwaba, Permanent Secretary for Electricity, the Ministry is receiving in excess of five formal investment proposals daily from both local and international entities. This sustained influx signals a robust vote of confidence in the government’s strategic push to diversify Zambia’s energy portfolio and enhance energy security.

“This level of interest is not only timely but also reinforces the credibility of our policy direction,” Mr. Simwaba said. He added that while the enthusiasm is welcome, licensed investors must now transition from planning to implementation, ensuring that projects translate into real energy solutions on the ground.

The surge in investor activity coincides with the country’s broader effort to address current power shortages and fulfill President Hakainde Hichilema’s directive to install at least 1,000 megawatts (MW) of solar capacity by December 2025.

In light of persistent challenges in hydropower generation due to climate change, the Ministry has reaffirmed its commitment to solar energy as a cornerstone of Zambia’s sustainable energy future. To that end, the government is expediting the evaluation and approval of proposals that align with national energy objectives.

The Ministry also lauded the private sector for its proactive role in responding to Zambia’s call for renewable energy investment. It reiterated its commitment to cultivating a conducive environment for innovation, public-private partnerships, and the rapid deployment of clean energy infrastructure.

With momentum building, Zambia is poised to make significant strides toward a resilient, diversified, and climate-smart energy system—powered by the sun and supported by global collaboration.

The disclosure was made through an official communication from Mr. Bob Sianjalika, Principal Public Relations Officer at the Ministry of Energy.
