The Zambia Research and Education Network (ZAMREN) is pleased to announce that its Board Chairperson, Professor Mundia Muya, has been elected to the Board of Trustees of the UbuntuNet Alliance.
The election was held during the Alliance’s Annual General Meeting, hosted at ZAMREN House in Lusaka, which convened delegates from 16 member countries across Eastern and Southern Africa.
Professor Muya, who also serves as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Zambia, is widely recognized for his distinguished career in civil engineering, academia and governance. His election to the UbuntuNet Alliance Board is a significant endorsement of his leadership credentials and a major milestone for Zambia, amplifying the nation’s role in steering the development of digital connectivity and research collaboration across the continent.
Joining a key strategic board that oversees the vision, policy direction and sustainability of research and education networking in the region, Professor Muya brings over three decades of experience. His academic journey includes a PhD in Construction Management and an MSc in Construction from Loughborough University in the United Kingdom, as well as a Bachelor of Engineering from the University of Zambia.
Reacting to the appointment, ZAMREN Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Stein Mkandawire, hailed Professor Muya as an outstanding leader and a passionate advocate for advancing research and education networks in Africa.

In his new role, Professor Muya will help steer governance, shape policy and guide the UbuntuNet Alliance’s mission to support National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) in delivering affordable broadband connectivity and innovative services to the research and education sectors across Eastern and Southern Africa.
The UbuntuNet Alliance is a key regional association of NRENs, dedicated to providing high speed connectivity and shared services to enhance research and education collaboration. With this appointment, Zambia further solidifies its leadership in advancing Africa’s knowledge economy and digital transformation.
