In a high-energy event at Zamtel Park, Hon. Felix C. Mutati, Minister of Technology and Science, officiated the launch of Zamtel’s Corporate Strategic Plan for 2025-2029, a visionary roadmap poised to transform Zambia’s telecommunications landscape. The Minister praised the plan as “visionary, ambitious, and necessary,” emphasizing that innovation is imperative for Zamtel’s survival and competitiveness in an increasingly dynamic industry.

The launch, attended by key government officials, industry leaders, and digital economy stakeholders, reaffirmed Zamtel’s strategic role in bridging Zambia’s digital divide. The Minister particularly commended the company’s commitment to expanding rural connectivity, ensuring that millions of underserved citizens gain access to affordable and high-quality digital services.

Zamtel’s Chief Executive Officer Mr Jason Mwanza outlined a bold growth trajectory, highlighting three key targets designed to enhance market position and operational efficiency.

  1. Profitability & Growth

Zamtel recorded an impressive 37% revenue growth over the past 12 months.

The company aims to generate K11.1 billion in revenue and expand its market share to 31% by 2029.

Market share has already increased from 17.3% in 2022 to 20.5% in 2024, according to the ZICTA ICT Sector Mid-Year Market Report.

  1. Strengthened Financial Position

Zamtel successfully cleared K1.2 billion in statutory debts dating back to 2012, restoring financial stability.

A strategic asset rationalization initiative has seen Zamtel move into a new corporate headquarters, optimizing operational efficiency.

Key partnerships with financial institutions, including Absa, Access Bank, Stanbic, ZANACO, and Standard Chartered, are supporting sustainable growth and technological advancements.

  1. Debt Clearance with ZRA

A significant milestone in Zamtel’s turnaround strategy is the full settlement of longstanding statutory debts, including obligations to the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) and NAPSA.

This achievement not only stabilizes the company’s financial position but also paves the way for focused investments in infrastructure, technology, and customer experience.

Despite these ambitious plans, Minister Mutati challenged Zamtel to define clear impact metrics for its transformation strategy. “How many jobs will this create? What percentage of Zambians will gain digital access?” he questioned, urging Zamtel to shift from outdated models to bold, customer-centric innovation to maintain a competitive edge.

With 5G, artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), and green technology investments on the horizon, Zamtel stands at the cusp of a digital revolution. These initiatives position the company to lead Zambia’s telecommunications sector into the future, reinforcing its status as a powerhouse in the nation’s digital transformation.
