The Zambia Police Service has formally arrested and charged two individuals from the country’s disciplined forces in connection with the production and distribution of obscene material that has shocked the nation.
In an official statement issued by Police Public Relations Officer Rae Hamoonga, the suspects have been named as Katundu Lumweka, a 33-year-old Correctional Officer based in Bwacha Compound, Kabwe, and Rhoda Njovu, a 31-year-old Staff Sergeant in the Zambia National Service (ZNS) residing in Roma, Lusaka.
According to the police, the two were allegedly involved in jointly recording an explicit video, which was later circulated via WhatsApp to a contact. The material quickly gained traction, triggering an investigation that led to their apprehension.
Following the probe, the duo has been jointly charged with:
Production of Obscene Matters or Things, contrary to Section 177(1)(a) of the Penal Code Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.
Additionally, Rhoda Njovu, the ZNS Staff Sergeant, has been individually charged with Circulation of Obscene Matters or Things, contrary to Section 177(1)(b) of the same Penal Code.
Both suspects are currently in police custody awaiting the processing of police bond, with further legal proceedings expected to follow.
The arrest has reignited public debate over professionalism, discipline, and the conduct of personnel serving in Zambia’s uniformed services. It also raises concerns about digital responsibility and the misuse of social media platforms.
As the matter proceeds to court, law enforcement agencies have reaffirmed their commitment to upholding the law, regardless of the status or position of the offenders.
