‎Mongu, Zambia.

‎Lewanika General Hospital in Mongu has received a substantial donation of essential medical and food supplies from the First Lady of the Republic of Zambia, Her Excellency Mrs. Mutinta Hichilema, aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery and empowering communities across Western Province.

‎The donation, which included 69 mattresses, 100 bags of mealie meal, 60 bales of sugar, 70 cases of cooking oil, 60 bags of rice, 58 blankets and 80 sewing machines for local cooperatives, was presented on the First Lady’s behalf by Mrs. Charity Kapala, Technical Advisor for Projects in the Office of the First Lady.

‎Speaking during the handover, Mrs. Kapala emphasized that the gesture reflects the First Lady’s commitment to supporting vulnerable communities and promoting economic empowerment.

‎“This donation goes beyond providing supplies; it is a symbol of love, solidarity, and hope for our people. The medical supplies will support patient care, while the sewing machines will equip women and youth with the tools to become self-reliant,” Mrs. Kapala stated.

‎Western Province Minister Hon. Kapelwa Mbangweta, MP, described the donation as timely, acknowledging the challenges faced by the hospital as it serves the entire province.

‎“The First Lady’s compassion is deeply appreciated. Lewanika Hospital, which marked a century of service in 2023, continues to face resource constraints. This support complements government efforts and brings real change to our communities,” Hon. Mbangweta said.

‎He also highlighted progress in the health sector under the New Dawn Government, including improved drug availability from 46% in 2021 to 80.5% in 2025, the recruitment of health workers and the delivery of critical equipment such as digital X-ray machines, anesthetic units, and a renal dialysis facility to Lewanika Hospital.

‎Lewanika General Hospital Medical Superintendent, Dr. Samutumwa Njekwa, expressed gratitude on behalf of the hospital staff and patients.

‎“This donation will significantly ease the pressure on our facilities and improve patient care. We thank Her Excellency, the First Lady, for remembering the people of Western Province. We assure her that the donated items will reach the intended beneficiaries and will be put to effective use,” Dr. Njekwa said.

‎He further acknowledged ongoing developments at the hospital, including upgrades to the children’s ward, outpatient department and the expected arrival of a CT scan machine within the next three months.

‎The ceremony was attended by senior government officials, hospital staff, and members of the public, who expressed appreciation for the First Lady’s commitment to advancing healthcare and community empowerment in Western Province.
