Zambia is hosting the 14th African Air Forces Symposium, where Air Force Chiefs from 41 nations have convened to enhance regional collaboration in disaster response, humanitarian assistance, and security operations.

Opening the symposium on behalf of President Hakainde Hichilema, Acting Defence Minister Honourable Douglas Syakalima emphasized the need for collective action to address continental challenges and strengthen African unity.

“We are ready to support and collaborate with the Association of African Air Forces (AAAF) in any way necessary. Together, we can ensure that our Air Forces are not only guardians of the skies but also champions of hope and resilience for our people,” said President Hichilema.

The President highlighted how climate change continues to pose significant threats across Africa, particularly in Zambia, where food security has been affected.

He commended the Zambia Defence Force for its proactive role in combating hunger and responding to climate-related emergencies.

“Here in Zambia, the Defence Forces, including the Zambia Air Force, have risen to the challenge by contributing to food security,” he stated.

Zambia Air Force Commander and Chairman of the Association of African Air Forces (AAAF), Lieutenant General Oscar Nyoni, reaffirmed the need for African Air Forces to take a more active role in humanitarian relief efforts and regional security coordination.

“With our assets and skilled personnel, Air Forces can provide vital assistance to nations in distress,” said Lt. Gen. Nyoni.

He outlined key initiatives under his leadership, including:

  1. Women, Peace, and Security Programs – Strengthening gender inclusion in security operations.
  2. Senior Enlisted Forum’s Non-Commissioned Handbook – Standardizing training and leadership frameworks across African Air Forces.

As the symposium progresses, it is expected to strengthen military cooperation across Africa, paving the way for more coordinated disaster response efforts and enhanced continental security strategies.
