Zambia’s infrastructure transformation agenda continues to gain momentum as the Government officially commissioned the Aluni-Mulonga Acrow Bridge in Kanchibiya District, a project set to enhance regional connectivity, stimulate commerce, and improve livelihoods.
The commissioning ceremony, led by Hon. Eng. Charles L. Milupi, Minister of Infrastructure, Housing, and Urban Development, was marked by a ribbon-cutting and plaque unveiling, witnessed by local leaders including Hon. Sunday Chanda, Member of Parliament, members of the Road Development Agency (RDA) board, and His Royal Highness Chief Luchembe. The symbolic first crossing across the bridge by the dignitaries signified a new chapter for communities previously cut off during the rainy season.
Hon. Njavwa Simutowe, Minister for Muchinga Province, described the bridge as more than a physical connection — calling it an enabler of prosperity. “This bridge will open access to schools, health facilities, and markets. It will accelerate trade, reduce transport costs, and foster unity among the people of Kanchibiya,” he noted.
Hon. Milupi reaffirmed the Government’s focus on responsible and strategic infrastructure development. He highlighted that the Aluni-Mulonga Acrow Bridge, constructed at a cost of K8.3 million, forms part of a broader initiative that will see 131 Acrow bridges installed across seven provinces under the RDA’s supervision. Importantly, the Minister emphasized that these infrastructure developments are being delivered through innovative financing models, including 12 Public-Private Partnership agreements signed between 2022 and 2024 — unlocking private sector capital and minimizing public debt exposure.
For Kanchibiya residents, the bridge promises transformative change. Local farmers will now have reliable access to markets, reducing post-harvest losses and increasing incomes. Children will more easily attend school year-round, and access to healthcare services will no longer be hindered by flooded waterways.
The commissioning of the Aluni-Mulonga Bridge reflects President Hakainde Hichilema’s vision of building infrastructure that empowers citizens, connects rural communities, and stimulates economic diversification. The bridge stands as a testament to the New Dawn Government’s resolve to drive Zambia toward inclusive growth and resilient development.
With additional bridges and road infrastructure projects in progress across the country, the Government is laying the groundwork for stronger rural-urban integration, greater trade flows, and improved quality of life for all Zambians.
