Lusaka, Zambia.

In a landmark initiative to enhance digital connectivity across Zambia, the Government, in partnership with Airtel and IHS Towers, has announced the construction of 152 new telecommunications towers over the next six months.

This expansion will boost network coverage to 91.6%, significantly bridging the digital divide and ensuring more citizens have access to reliable communication services.

Minister of Technology and Science, Honourable Felix C. Mutati, MP, highlighted the importance of public-private collaboration in achieving universal connectivity.

“The Republic of Zambia recognizes the transformative power of digital connectivity. Ensuring that every citizen, regardless of location, has access to communication services requires strong partnerships with the private sector. By mobilizing resources, expertise, and innovative solutions, we can accelerate digital inclusion and economic growth,” he stated.

The recently released Zamstat preliminary report for 2024 confirms the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector as the fastest-growing industry in Zambia, expanding by 17.4%—a testament to the impact of continuous investment in network infrastructure.

As outlined in the 8th National Development Plan (8NDP), digital infrastructure plays a crucial role in Zambia’s economic transformation and job creation. Under this framework, the government is committed to:

  1. Expanding mobile and broadband infrastructure to reach remote and underserved communities.
  2. Strengthening ICT policies and regulatory frameworks to create an enabling environment for digital growth.
  3. Promoting digital literacy and skills development to empower citizens to participate fully in the digital economy.
  4. Encouraging innovation and technological adoption across key sectors such as agriculture, health, education, and commerce.

Through strategic partnerships with telecom operators, technology firms, and investors, Zambia is ensuring the realization of the 8NDP’s digital goals. The New Dawn Government will continue to facilitate investment in connectivity projects while providing incentives for private sector participation in network expansion initiatives.

By bridging the digital divide, Zambia is not only advancing its technological landscape but also unlocking new economic opportunities, fostering innovation, and empowering communities to thrive in the digital age.
