The Ministry of Tourism has reaffirmed its commitment to preserving Zambia’s intangible heritage through the promotion of traditional ceremonies as key drivers of cultural tourism.
This was emphasized during the 2025 Bene Mukuni Traditional Ceremony of the Leya people, held in Kazungula District under the distinguished leadership of His Royal Highness Chief Mukuni Monokalya. The event drew a vibrant gathering of cultural enthusiasts, community leaders, and tourists, highlighting Zambia’s rich cultural tapestry.
Speaking at the ceremony, Ministry of Tourism Permanent Secretary Mr. Evans Muhanga noted that traditional ceremonies like Bene Mukuni play a critical role in safeguarding national identity and fostering unity. He stressed that these cultural events are not only integral to heritage preservation but also vital to boosting tourism, particularly in rural communities.
“Traditional ceremonies offer both local and international visitors a unique opportunity to experience Zambia’s diverse customs, values and histories,” Mr. Muhanga stated. “They are powerful tools for cultural exchange and economic development through tourism.”
The Ministry commended Chief Mukuni, the Bene Mukuni Royal Establishment, and all stakeholders for successfully hosting this year’s ceremony. It also recognized the New Dawn Government’s continued support in elevating Zambia’s cultural assets on the national and international stage.
As custodians of cultural heritage, the Ministry pledged ongoing support to traditional ceremonies nationwide, describing them as essential pillars of sustainable tourism and national pride.
