The Government is on track to complete the construction of 816 modern housing units at Buffalo Park Barracks in Lusaka, marking a significant step in improving the welfare and operational readiness of Zambia’s defence personnel.
Initially stalled in 2016 due to funding challenges, the housing project was revived following the government’s renewed commitment to release funds consistently over the past three years, resulting in tremendous progress on-site.
During a tour of the project, Ministry of Defence Permanent Secretary, Mr. Maambo Haamaundu, expressed satisfaction with the pace of construction, noting that the Zhongmei Group of Companies, the contractor handling the works, is on course to complete the project within the 2026 target.
“Government is prioritising this project to ensure our officers and soldiers have decent accommodation that supports their dignity and service to the nation,” Mr. Haamaundu stated.
The PS emphasised that the government remains committed to timely funding to ensure the uninterrupted progress of the works, reflecting the administration’s focus on improving the welfare of the men and women in uniform.
Currently, over 500 workers have been engaged on-site, contributing to the construction of low-cost, medium-cost, and high-cost housing units designed to meet the diverse needs of defence personnel and their families.
Once completed, the Buffalo Park Barracks housing project will not only enhance living conditions for soldiers but also improve operational efficiency within the Zambia Defence Forces by ensuring officers live close to their workstations.
The project forms part of the President Hakainde Hichilema’s, New Dawn Government’s broader agenda to upgrade infrastructure across key sectors while creating jobs and stimulating economic activity through large-scale construction projects.
