Zimbabwe has reiterated its deep appreciation for Zambia’s role in its liberation struggle and reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening bilateral relations. Speaking at the 47th memorial of the 1978 Kavalamanja-Kakaro atrocities in Luangwa, Zimbabwean High Commissioner to Zambia Charity Charamba emphasized that Zimbabwe considers its relationship with Zambia invaluable, built on a shared history, mutual sacrifices, and ongoing cooperation.

The memorial event honored Zambian soldiers, civilians, and Zimbabwean freedom fighters who perished during the unprovoked attack by Rhodesian forces under Ian Smith in March 1978. High Commissioner Charamba, expressed Zimbabwe’s eternal gratitude to Zambia for enduring hardships and making sacrifices to support its independence in 1980.

“Zimbabwe will forever remain grateful to Zambia for standing with us during the struggle for emancipation. Our bond is inseparable, and President Emmerson Mnangagwa is committed to ensuring that our relations remain strong across all sectors,” she stated.

She further highlighted that the Joint Permanent Commission Cooperation (JPCC) and the Joint Permanent Commission on Defence and Security (JPCDS) are key frameworks that will continue fostering economic, political, and security collaboration between the two nations.

Lusaka Province Minister Sheal Mulyata, who officiated at the event, reaffirmed Zambia’s commitment to treating all nations as equal and valued partners, with Zimbabwe holding a special place in Zambia’s foreign policy due to shared historical ties.

“Our two nations have stood together through thick and thin. We must guard this relationship jealously, not only to honor the past but also to ensure a prosperous future for both Zambia and Zimbabwe,” Minister Mulyata, stated.

She also acknowledged the need to improve infrastructure in Luangwa, announcing that increased Constituency Development Fund (CDF) allocations will support the rehabilitation of the Feira-Kavalamanja-Kakaro road, a key route connecting communities in the region.

Within three months, roadworks equipment procured through CDF is expected to be on the ground, enhancing connectivity and economic opportunities for local residents.

Lusaka Province Permanent Secretary Eng. Joe Kalusa emphasized the importance of preserving historical accounts of the Kavalamanja-Kakaro battle, calling for its inclusion in educational curricula to ensure future generations understand the sacrifices made for Zimbabwe’s freedom.

“We need to document and teach our young people about this history so that they appreciate the price paid for the liberties we enjoy today,” Eng. Kalusa remarked.

Beyond historical ties, Zambia and Zimbabwe continue to deepen cooperation in trade, security, infrastructure development, and regional stability. As both countries look toward the future, their shared commitment to economic growth and unity remains a testament to the enduring strength of their partnership.
